“Protective Paints” by Slap Rash

Great to see this tune out, and if you’ve not heard it yet you should check out the video here or give the track a listen! We have since tracked more material together this summer, but this track was all recorded in one day in February.

As is often the case I completely forgot to take photos of the setup in February. In my defence we were trying to get the whole track down in one day, however the setup was ultimately very similar to what we did in July - you can get the idea of from the pictures above.

As always, giving myself as many options as possible with the room mics - there’s two more on the other side of the chimney which are even more diffuse. As Slap Rash are a duo, to fill the mix we took inspiration from Huw’s live setup and tracked multiple layers of the bass: first through a bass amp, which plays throughout, and then additionally through guitar amps for the heavier sections.

The synth sounds you can hear are samples of me hitting a mixture of metal poles and glasses (drinking) run through a sampler for a bit more of an industrial sound.

I look forward to the next few tunes being finished and released: Protective Paints worked really well as a blueprint, while the tunes that follow really build on the same approach.
