Maruja - ‘Zeitgeist’ - Out Now

The new single by Maruja, ‘Zeitgeist’, is out now! You can listen to it on whatever your favourite streaming service is, but should you not have one there’s always here.

It was lots of fun to work on this track, it was particularly nice to be recording back in Low Four Studios following the Greg Bounce sessions (more on that later) and the live session - I’m a big fan of the big room!

Much like a lot of the Maruja recording sessions the aim was to try and get as many of the band performing together at the same time for the initial takes, if you’ve seen them live you will know how much energy they have when performing together! The issue in the main live room at Low Four is trying to isolate the saxophone in the same room, so in the end we focussed on tracking Drums with the Bass and Guitar - aware that there were going to be plenty of overdubs to come to fill out the track. We tracked the guitars through DI boxes, but simultaneously re-amped them in the downstairs live room - which meant pulling together a quick mix when picking takes was much more reflective of how the track might eventually sound.

Tracking a stack of room microphones for essentially everything made for an interesting mix, although perhaps visually unmanageable with 8-tracks per guitar overdub (one day I will learn to love folders). It does mean that the use of artificial reverb is fairly limited - which gives the track a particular sound, one I think we will be keeping unique to this piece, I feel the medium length room sound helps contribute towards the song’s frantic and panicked nature.

Enjoy listening!
